Bentyl (Dicyclomine) is an anticholinergic. It works by blocking a chemical in the smooth muscle of the stomach and intestines causing them to relax which reduces cramping. Do NOT use Bentyl (Dicyclomine) if: •you are allergic to any ingredient in Bentyl (Dicyclomine) •you have blockage of the esophagus stomach intestine or urinary tract •you have heart problems due to severe bleeding •you have glaucoma •you have inflammation of the esophagus due to acid reflux loss of strength in the intestinal muscles or chronic inflammation and ulceration of the bowel •you have myasthenia gravis (a condition in which the muscles become progressively paralyzed) •you are breast-feeding Contact your doctor right away if any of these apply to you. Before using Bentyl (Dicyclomine): Some medical conditions may interact with Bentyl (Dicyclomine). Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines especially any of the following: •Amantadine antiarrhythmics (eg quinidine) antihistamines (eg diphenhydramine) benzodiazepines (eg diazepam) monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) (eg phenelzine) narcotic pain medicine (eg meperidine) nitrates (eg nitroglycerin isosorbide) nitrites (eg sodium nitrite) phenothiazines (eg chlorpromazine) sympathomimetics (eg pseudoephedrine) or tricyclic antidepressants (eg amitriptyline) because they may increase the risk of Bentyl (Dicyclomine)'s side effects •Metoclopramide or phenothiazines (eg chlorpromazine) because their effectiveness may be decreased by Bentyl (Dicyclomine) •Digoxin because the risk of its side effects may be increased by Bentyl (Dicyclomine) This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. How to use Bentyl (Dicyclomine): Use Bentyl (Dicyclomine) as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions. •Bentyl (Dicyclomine) is usually given as an injection at your doctors office hospital or clinic. If you will be using Bentyl (Dicyclomine) at home a health care provider will teach you how to use it. Be sure you understand how to use Bentyl (Dicyclomine). Follow the procedures you are taught when you use a dose. Contact your health care provider if you have any questions. •Bentyl (Dicyclomine) is for intramuscular (IM) injection only. It is NOT for intravenous (IV) use. •Do not use Bentyl (Dicyclomine) if it contains particles is cloudy or discolored or if the vial is cracked or damaged. •Keep this product as well as syringes and needles out of the reach of children and pets. Do not reuse needles syringes or other materials. Ask your health care provider how to dispose of these materials after use. Follow all local rules for disposal. •The injection form of Bentyl (Dicyclomine) is only given short-term when the oral form cannot be taken. Your health care provider will prescribe the oral form of Bentyl (Dicyclomine) as soon as you are able to take it. •Use Bentyl (Dicyclomine) on a regular schedule around the clock unless your doctor tells you otherwise. •If you miss a dose of Bentyl (Dicyclomine) take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once. Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Bentyl (Dicyclomine). Important safety information: •Bentyl (Dicyclomine) may cause drowsiness dizziness blurred vision or lightheadedness. These effects may be worse if you take it with alcohol or certain medicines. Use Bentyl (Dicyclomine) with caution. Do not drive or perform other possibly unsafe tasks until you know how you react to it. •Do not drink alcohol or use medicines that may cause drowsiness (eg sleep aids muscle relaxers) while you are using Bentyl (Dicyclomine); it may add to their effects. Ask your pharmacist if you have questions about which medicines may cause drowsiness. •Bentyl (Dicyclomine) may cause dizziness lightheadedness or fainting; alcohol hot weather exercise or fever may increase these effects. To prevent them sit up or stand slowly especially in the morning. Sit or lie down at the first sign of any of these effects. •Do not become overheated in hot weather or while you are being active; heatstroke may occur. •Bentyl (Dicyclomine) may make your eyes more sensitive to sunlight. It may help to wear sunglasses. •Use Bentyl (Dicyclomine) with caution in the ELDERLY; they may be more sensitive to its effects. •Bentyl (Dicyclomine) should not be used in CHILDREN younger than 6 months old; safety and effectiveness in these children have not been confirmed. •PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: If you become pregnant contact your doctor. You will need to discuss the benefits and risks of using Bentyl (Dicyclomine) while you are pregnant. Bentyl (Dicyclomine) is found in breast milk. Do not breast-feed while taking Bentyl (Dicyclomine). Possible side effects of Bentyl (Dicyclomine): All medicines may cause side effects but many people have no or minor side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome: •Blurred vision; constipation; decreased sweating; difficulty sleeping; dizziness; drowsiness; dry mouth; headache; lightheadedness; loss of taste; nausea; nervousness. Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur: •Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth face lips or tongue); agitation; confusion; diarrhea; difficulty focusing your eyes; difficulty moving; difficulty speaking; difficulty urinating; disorientation; exaggerated sense of well-being; fainting; hallucinations; pounding in the chest; rapid heartbeat; short-term memory loss; unusual weakness; vomiting. If OVERDOSE is suspected: Symptoms may include blurred vision; convulsions (seizures); difficulty breathing; dilated pupils; disorientation; excessive thirst; flushed hot dry skin; hallucinations or unusual behavior; muscle weakness; nausea; rapid heartbeat and breathing; restlessness; unusual dizziness or drowsiness; unusually dry mouth; vomiting. Proper storage of Bentyl (Dicyclomine): Store Bentyl (Dicyclomine) at room temperature below 86 degrees F (30 degrees C). Protect from freezing. Store away from heat moisture and light. Do not use Aygestin if you are pregnant. Stop using the medication and tell your doctor if you become pregnant during treatment. • Avoid smoking cigarettes while taking Aygestin. Smoking increases your risk of developing a heart attack stroke or blood clot. • Aygestin does not protect you from sexually transmitted diseases — including HIV and AIDS. Using a condom is the only way to help protect yourself from these diseases. What is Aygestin? • Aygestin is a form of progesterone a female hormone. • Aygestin is used for birth control (contraception) to prevent pregnancy. Aygestin is also used to treat menstrual disorders endometriosis or abnormal vaginal bleeding caused by a hormone imbalance. • Aygestin may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide. What should I discuss with my healthcare provider before using Aygestin? • Aygestin is in the FDA pregnancy category X. If you plan to become pregnant after you stop taking Aygestin ask your doctor how long you should wait before trying to get pregnant. • You should not take Aygestin if you have: a history of stroke or blood clots; liver disease; a history of stroke or blood clots; cancer of the breast of ovary; unusual vaginal bleeding that a doctor has not diagnosed; or complications from a recent miscarriage or abortion. • Taking Aygestin may be dangerous if you have any of the conditions listed above. • Before taking Aygestin tell your doctor if you have: high blood pressure angina or heart disease; a bleeding disorder such as hemophilia; diabetes; high cholesterol; migraines; a history of depression or mental illness; asthma; or seizures or epilepsy. • If you have any of the conditions listed above you may not be able to use Aygestin or you may require a dosage adjustment or special monitoring during treatment. • This medication can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. Tell any doctor who treats you that you are using Aygestin. How should I take Aygestin? • The dose schedule for Aygestin may be different for birth control than for treating other conditions. To best treat your condition Aygestin should be used exactly as your doctor has prescribed it for you. Do not use more of the medication than recommended. Do not take Aygestin for longer than your doctor has prescribed. • Take the medication at the same time each dose day. Taking a pill late or missing a pill can increase your chances of having breakthrough bleeding or getting pregnant. • For birth control start a new pack of pills the day after your last pack is finished. There is no break between packs. • If you vomit soon after taking Aygestin use a backup method of birth control (such as a condom and/ or spermicide) for 48 hours. • You may have some light bleeding or spotting between periods. Continue taking Aygestin even if this occurs. • If your menstrual period is late you may be pregnant. If it has been more than 45 says since the start of your last period call your doctor or use a home pregnancy test. • You will need to have yearly physical exams and Pap smears while you are using Aygestin. Examine your breasts at home every month to check for lumps. It is important that you not miss any scheduled visits to your doctor. • After you stop using Aygestin you may start bleeding within a few days. • Store Aygestin at room temperature away from moisture and heat. What happens if I miss a dose? • Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Then take the next dose at your regularly scheduled time. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose. • If you were more than 3 hours late in taking your dose use a backup method of birth control (such as a condom and/ or spermicide). Keep using the backup method for at least 48 hours to ensure protection from pregnancy. • If you are not sure what to do about a missed dose keep taking Aygestin and use a backup method of birth control until you can talk to your doctor. What happens if I overdose? • An overdose of Aygestin is not likely to cause serious overdose symptoms. Call your doctor if you think you have used too much of this medicine. • Symptoms of a Aygestin overdose have not been reported. What should I avoid while taking Aygestin? • Women who use hormone medication should not smoke. Smoking will increase your risk of having a serious side effect from Aygestin such as heart attack stroke or a blood clot. • Aygestin does not protect you from sexually transmitted diseases — including HIV and AIDS. Using a condom is the only way to protect yourself from these diseases. What are the possible side effects of Aygestin? • Stop using Aygestin and call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects: an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of your throat; swelling of your lips tongue or face; or hives); abnormal vaginal bleeding; late or missed menstrual period; a partial or complete loss of vision blurred vision double vision or a sudden onset of bulging eyes; sudden and severe headache pain behind your eyes dizziness or fainting; speech problems; vomiting or jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes); or sudden or severe pain in your lower stomach. • Other less serious side effects may be more likely to occur.
